Tips and hints:

  • Always connect your computer to the modem directly with an internet cable to get a reliable outcome.
Because your current router may not be able to support high speeds even when using an UTP cable. Do not use WiFi. WiFi is influenced by external factors, which can be detrimental to measuring your internet speed.
  • Use a suitable UTP cable.
Check if you are using a correct UTP cable. This cable is also called an internet cable, network cable or ethernet cable. Poor quality UTP cables reduce internet speed. Check if CAT5E or CAT6 is printed on the side of the cable. Check if there are no cracks or kinks in the cable. Do not roll the UTP cable.
  • Can my PC or laptop handle high internet speeds?
When you connect the computer or laptop with a UTP cable, it will in principle reach the maximum internet speed of your subscription. Older laptops and PCs are an exception to this. With this you do not always reach the maximum speed of your internet subscription. Therefore, check whether your computer supports speeds of up to 1000 Mbit per second.
  • Can my router or switch handle high internet speeds?
Do you use network equipment to connect multiple devices, such as a separate router or switch? Then check whether it supports a speed of at least 1000 Mbit per second. You will find the specifications in the manual of this device or on the manufacturer's website. Make sure other home network users do not use the internet when testing.
  • Stay up-to-date!
Make sure your computer and browser are up-to-date. An outdated internet browser or old operating system can slow down your internet connection or even stop it altogether. And it is a security risk. Therefore, always download and install all Windows/Linux/Mac updates and check your internet browser for updates. You can also set this to do this automatically.
  • Temporarely disable your firewall.
A firewall can slow down your internetspeed because it checks for viruses and malware often in real time. A slow processor or CPU causes this.
  • For wifi use 5Ghz whenever possible.
Cheap and older wifi routers often have the 2.4Ghz band only. This means this band is very crowdy and often leads to signal conflicts. 5Ghz is not yet widely used and has much more bandwith, like you have the highway to your self without speedlimitations or traffic jams.
